Show Spoiler

Set in the 24th century and decades after the adventures of the original crew of the starship Enterprise, this new series is the long-awaited successor to the original <a href=">Star Trek (1966). Under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the all new Enterprise NCC 1701-D travels out to distant planets to seek out new life and to boldly go where no one has gone before.
Set decades after Captain Kirk's five-year mission, a new generation of Starfleet officers set off in a new Enterprise on their own mission to go where no one has gone before.
Ah, Star Trek: The Next Generation. The greatest science fiction show ever created. The link with the original '60s show was in concept rather than style - while the crew still went where no-one had gone before in a ship named Enterprise, this time they had some good plots too. No more Bonanza-in-space, this is more Thirtysomething-in-space. But much better, of course, and with far more explosions.

Don't listen to old fools who claim that Captain Kirk was the greatest starship captain in the galaxy. Kirk was a stubborn idiot who couldn't see past his own ego and has no place in '90s (well, '80s) TV. I laughed when he died in Generations.

Lots of people live in the illusion that Star Trek is the great show that many others claim it to be. Sure, it is mildly entertaining, but it is no more legendary than Randall and Hopkirk Deceased or The Professionals. If it weren't for the brilliance of TNG, it would be long forgotten.

Sorry, but ST:TOS (The Old Series) isn't in the same league as it's successors. TNG is more intelligent, more exciting, has deeper characters and is much, much better. Think of it this way - would you rather drive a brand new BMW 750i or a beaten up old 2002?
Star Trek: The Next Generation is sort of a sequal/spin-off series to the 60's classic, Star Trek. The series takes place in the 23rd Century on the Galaxy-Class ship U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Captained by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Co-Stars are First Officer Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes); 2nd Officer Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner); Chief Engineer Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton); Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn); Councilor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis); and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). This 7-year series follows the crew as they explore the reaches of space, encountering species like the Cardassians, Romulans, the Q, and even the Borg. In my opinion, a series to watch. There are 3 movies based on this. (With a 4th on the way. It should be here by the end of 2002)

An uneasy peace with the Federation remains, as there were still frequent skirmishes with the Klingons over time. The Klingon Empire remained an independent government outside of the Federation.

Around 2300, the cooperation that existed between Klingons and Romulans since the 23rd century started to gradually degrade, perhaps fueled by the weakened state of the Klingons following the Praxis Incident, and their subsequent willingness to reconcile with the Federation.

An event known as the Tomed incident occurred in 2311. Although details were never provided, known facts suggest that it concerned a violation of the Romulan Neutral Zone, involvement of cloaked ships, and the death of thousands of lives, both Romulan and Federation. It led to the Treaty of Algeron, which reaffirmed the Neutral Zone as a no-fly zone and prohibited the Federation from developing cloaked vessels. The treaty also ceased virtually all dialogue between the Romulans and the Federation for the next 50 years.

In 2344, the Romulans attacked a Klingon outpost on Narendra III. It is unknown what sparked the incident, but the intervention of the Enterprise-C, a Federation vessel, despite being destroyed in the battle, was perceived as particularly honourable by the Klingons. As a result, relations with the Klingons improved drastically. About two years later, Romulans attacked the Klingon outpost at Kithomer (possibly over a territorial dispute) and killed nearly all inhabitants, leading to the start of the Romulan-Klingon war around the 2350s.

In 2363, the Enterprise-D was launched.

In 2364, Jean-Luc Picard assumed command of the Enterprise-D and a continuing mission of space exploration is started.

It takes place from 2364-2370 A.D. 95 years after the events of the original TV series, 94 years after the events of the animated series, & 71 years after the events of the Undiscovered Country movie.
